Red Ribbon Week Events: October 17-31, 2009

Mayor Bob Kiss (pictured below) made a substance abuse prevention proclamation at a BPHC hosted event held in front of City Hall during National Substance Abuse Prevention Red Ribbon Week in October.  In addition, BPHC staff and

coalition members manned a table on Church St. to distribute information about

BPHC and Red Ribbon Week events.  At the table, information about substance

abuse resources in and around Burlington were also available to educate the

community about what programs are available.

BPHC also hosted a community reception during Red Ribbon Week at the newly renovated Robert E. Miller Community Center.  All Burlington residents were invited to attend.

Burlington Smoke Free Parks Update:

Help Us Support Smoke Free Parks and Beaches in Burlington!

This past June the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department made the

decision to move forward with an educational effort to raise awareness about the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and the toxic effect litter from cigarettes is creating in our beaches and environment.   With the support and education of the Burlington Partnership for a Healthy Community, the Parks and Recreation Commission, decided to create Smoke Free Zones in all youth oriented and confined areas of the Burlington parks and beaches.

The Burlington Partnership for a Healthy Community has funded signs asking people not to smoke or dispose of tobacco products within 25 feet of playgrounds, bleachers, beaches or outdoor shelters.

This is currently an educational effort, and no Parks and Recreation policy or city ordinance has been put in place.  Please help to support the health and safety of our residents and environment by encouraging the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department to have all Burlington parks and beaches be totally smoke free. They need your input and support to put this important goal in place!

Remember:

This is about the smoke, NOT the smoker!
