Responsible Alcohol Service Project
Our coalition partners with the Cabaret Association of Burlington, The Church Street Marketplace Association, Burlington Police Department, VT Department. of Liquor Control, University of Vermont, Champlain College and Green Mountain Security started in 2009 to collaborate efforts addressing underage and high-risk drinking and the related consequences in downtown Burlington.
The Responsible Alcohol Service Work Group is committed to the following goals:
- Reduce youth access to alcohol and ensure a safe environment for those over the age of 21
- Avoiding business practices that promote high-risk drinking
- Providing options for patrons to get home safely
- Collaborating with community entities to solve challenges faced by alcohol retailers
- Create community policies and standards related to the safe sale and service of alcohol
- Providing server responsibility training opportunities for bar, restaurant and retail store staff
- Cultivating a relationship built on trust with Burlington Police Department
- Informing the community about our commitment to reduce underage and high risk drinking
Since 2008, our coalition has been working with the VT Department of Liquor Control to increase training opportunities and support for Burlington alcohol licensees. In addition, our work group helped to host trainings in April of 2010 and February of 2011 for bar and restaurant staff to teach practical strategies to reduce violent incidences, underage drinking and drinking and driving.
A big THANK YOU to the following businesses for voluntarily sending bouncers, bartenders and wait staff to these trainings:
